Home Book care

A kinder home for your books

Practical guide · 4 minute read

The most useful care routine is a quiet one: sensible storage, clean hands and attention to changes.

Choose a steady environment

Keep books away from direct sunlight, radiators, damp walls and places prone to leaks. Avoid attics and garages where conditions fluctuate. Leave space to inspect the shelf and keep books off the floor.

Support the binding

Stand ordinary-sized books upright with support, without packing them so tightly that removal becomes difficult. Store very large volumes flat in manageable stacks. A suitable protective box can help a fragile book.

Take a book down gently

Move neighbouring books back slightly so you can grasp the middle of the spine. Avoid hooking a finger over its top. Use clean, dry hands and a clear table, and support a book that resists opening instead of pressing it flat.

Notice changes early

Check for damp, insects and fresh debris. Set a suspicious item apart and seek advice if you suspect mould or an active pest problem. Keep food and drink away from your working area.
